Debating Ahmadinejad at Columbia

Writing by persiancowboy on Thursday, 27 of September , 2007 at 9:57 am

Jayati Vora has written one of the best analysis of Ahmadinejad’s speech at Columbia for The Nation.

Matteen Mokalla, an Iranian-American student at SIPA studying the Middle East, spoke of the mood on campus. “Before the talk, the entire campus was electrified,” he said. “Everybody was talking about it. When we were standing in line, we joked, ‘Is this the line for the Rolling Stones?’ Because it felt like that.”

But that pride and excitement was tarnished by the opening remarks of Columbia President Lee Bollinger. In his statement, combative and unduly vicious, Bollinger accused his invited guest of being nothing more than a “petty and cruel dictator,” of having a “fanatical mindset.” He claimed that this exercise was valuable in knowing one’s enemies and understanding “the mind of evil.”

These words were prefaced by his describing the invitation to Ahmadinejad as the “right thing to do.” As abhorrent as Bollinger’s parroting of Bushisms is, the invite was the right thing to do. Not because the Iranian president has a right to share some of his more odious views but because of “our right to listen. We do it for ourselves.”

Iran’s Dylan on the Lute, With Songs of Sly Protest

Writing by persiancowboy on Thursday, 27 of September , 2007 at 9:46 am

Thats title of New York Time’s article on Mohsen Namjoo, one of the most contriversial Persian singers currently living in Iran.

HE plays the setar, a traditional Persian lute, and is a master of classical Persian literature and poetry. But the sounds he draws from the instrument, along with his deep voice and his playful but subtly cutting lyrics about growing up in an Islamic state, have made Mohsen Namjoo the most controversial, and certainly the most daring, figure in Persian music today.

Some call him a genius, a sort of Bob Dylan of Iran, and say his satirical music accurately reflects the frustrations and disillusionment of young Iranians. His critics say his music makes a mockery of Persian classical and traditional music as he constantly blends it with Western jazz, blues and rock.

Iran bans Gmail and Google search

Writing by persiancowboy on Monday, 17 of September , 2007 at 10:46 am

I don’t know how accurate this is, but Jerusalem Post is reporting that Iran has banned access to Google search and Gmail. I’m not sure if Google’s social networking site, Orkut which is very popular in Iran is also banned.

“I can confirm these sites have been filtered,” said Hamid Shahriari, the secretary of Iran’s National Council of Information, but no reason was given, Mehr news agency reported.

Update: Daily Telegraph is reporting that Iran has unblocked Google:

“Due to an error, the Google site was filtered on Sunday evening but the error was corrected and now Google and its different sites like Gmail can be used,” said an official from the state-run communications company.

Hard Times Help Iran’s Leaders Tighten Their Grip

Hard Times Help Iran’s Leaders Tighten Their Grip
from the New York Times

Rents are soaring, inflation hovers around 17 percent, and 10 million Iranians live below the poverty line. The police shut 20 barbershops for men in Tehran last week because they offered inappropriate hairstyles, and women have been banned from riding bicycles in many places, as a crackdown on social freedoms presses on.
