Iran bans Gmail and Google search

I don’t know how accurate this is, but Jerusalem Post is reporting that Iran has banned access to Google search and Gmail. I’m not sure if Google’s social networking site, Orkut which is very popular in Iran is also banned.

“I can confirm these sites have been filtered,” said Hamid Shahriari, the secretary of Iran’s National Council of Information, but no reason was given, Mehr news agency reported.

Update: Daily Telegraph is reporting that Iran has unblocked Google:

“Due to an error, the Google site was filtered on Sunday evening but the error was corrected and now Google and its different sites like Gmail can be used,” said an official from the state-run communications company.
